: How can I adjust the aspect ratio of my photo?

The light sensitive chips from digital cameras are not generally configured in a 2:3 aspect ratio, as they are in traditional photography. This means that digital photos must be adjusted to a 2:3 aspect ratio to be developed in the traditional paper sizes of e.g. 10x15cm (4x6").

How to adjust your image files to a 2:3 aspect ratio:
With a photo editing software, you can crop your images to a 2:3 aspect ratio before uploading them to Pixum.

Your advantages:

  • You determine the final aspect of your image
  • The finished product is of a traditional size such as
    10 cm x 15 cm (4" x 6") and not, for example,
    10 cm x 13.3 cm (4" x 5.3")

(Please note : the typical norm sizes of 9 cm x 13 cm (3.5” x 5”), 10 cm x 15 cm (4” x 6”), 13 cm x 18 cm (6” x 7”), etc. are derived from the American inch. This means that, for example, a 9 cm x 13 cm photo is in reality 8.9 cm x 13.35 cm, and that a 10 cm x 15 cm photo is in reality 10.2 cm x 15.3 cm. Furthermore, there is a manufacturing tolerance of up to 3mm (0.02”) per photo. Do not, therefore, measure your photos with a ruler as the results will never be exactly what you expect. ;-))

When you resize your pictures, the original photo will not necessarily be modified. Ideally, a new image file with the original name plus an extension of "_crop" will be created. For example, the file “IMG000123.JPG” will be copied as “IMG000123_crop.JPG”. If this does not happen automatically, you can decide to do this manually.

How to adjust your image files to a 1:1 aspect ratio:
If, for example, your image file is of 1600 x 1200 pixel, then:
The shortest side is of 1200 pixel
The longest side is of 1600 pixel

To adjust your image to an aspect ratio 1:1, you must take the shortest side as calculation basis. You thus have to shorten your longest side to 1200 pixel. The new image size is now of 1200 x 1200 pixel.

How to adjust your image files to a 19:23 aspect ratio:
If, for example, your image file is of 1600 x 1200 pixel, then:
The smallest side is of 1200 pixel
The longest side is of 1600 pixel

To adjust your image to an aspect ratio of 19:23, you need to recalculate the longest side:
1200 pixel / 19 = 63.16
63.16 x 23 = 1453 pixel

You thus have to shorten your longest side to 1453 pixel. The new image size is now of 1200 x 1453 pixel.
